Music
Music in all Grades
Starting in kindergarten, Cleveland Elementary offers progressively advanced, high-quality music classes to every student. We believe in cultivating community, critical thinking, and joy through music education.
Cantare Con Vivo
Cantare Con Vivo is one of Oakland’s highest-regarded music education non-profit organizations. Cantare’s curriculum is based on the Kodaly method, focusing on musical understanding and performance through solid and beautiful singing technique. Cantare is currently funded partially through the PTA and partially from the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Oakland Unified.
Living Jazz Children's Program
Offered at no cost to Cleveland, the Living Jazz Children's Program (LJCP) provides music education for third grade classes. It has two complementary components (vocal and rhythm) that teach music through the lens of diverse cultural traditions and history.
The choral component teaches vocal fundamentals, simple body percussion and performance skills for large group ensemble singing, along with the historical and cultural context of the repertoire as it relates to the civil rights movement, Dr. King and its other leaders. LJCP provides weekly lessons throughout the entire school year culminating in high profile performances and in-school assemblies.
Strings
The Cleveland string program under Ms. Green is very strong, with all fourth and fifth grade students learning a string instrument (students choose violin, viola or cello). Interested students also travel to Franklin Elementary School on Wednesdays to join in the multi-school MUSE Orchestra.
Monthly All-School Sing
All families are welcome to join us the last Friday of the month in the afternoon, as all students get together and sing!
